A FEW OF OUR NATIVE ANIMALS

Male Red Kangaroo camouflaged well against the red dirt of the landscape.

Red Kangaroo

The largest of the kangaroo family, the female having the ability to suspend her pregnancy until conditions are more favourable.

There are many emu's in the wild, also some are farmed for meat, feathers, leather, eggs and oil. This little lady is a pet of our driver Alan. She needs a good therapist as she believes she is a horse.

Emu

This large flightless bird is found widely throughout Australia.
The female lays a clutch of large dark green eggs. That chore finished,
she then leaves the hassle of sitting on the eggs and raising the chicks to poor old dad.

The endangered Numbat helps control the white ant population by eating up to 20,000 per day.

Numbat
This small squirrel like marsupial is Western Australia's animal emblem.
Now found only in the south west of our state, it part of a regeneration program to help boost the numbers of this once critically endangered creature.
Numbats are active during the day around the same time as the termites,
their favourite food, consuming up to 20 000 in one day.

Possums often make their homes in a roof

Ring Tailed Possums

These cute nocturnal marsupials live in trees in the wild, however they have come to find house roofs make an excellent home also.

They live on a diet of Eucalyptus leaves and use their adaptable tail to carry things with and help them climb. They are also blessed with a thumb, which aids in their grip.

A very large monitor lizard.

Monitor Lizard

The monitor family contains the world's largest lizards. They are the only Australian lizards with forked tongues like a snake, which, like the snake they flick in and out catching scents in the air. Monitor lizards can use their claws and tails as weapons in self defense, but prefer to flee rather than attack.

The cute little dragon lizard

White Corellas and Pink and Grey Galahs are a familiar sight in Australia

Corella &Pink and Grey Galah

At certain special locations the birds are very friendly! Long sleeves are a good idea when feeding these birds this lady found out - their claws are quite sharp!

These cuddly looking ground burrowing marsupials are found on the nullarbor Plain in Western Australia among other places in Australia.

Wombat

These cuddly looking creatures are marsupials like the kangaroo, having a pouch to carry their young. They live in underground burrows and are nocturnal.
One species is found on the Nullarbor Plain in Western Australia. Wombats can be viewed along with other Australian natives, such as their relative the Koala, at most of our animal parks and the Perth Zoo.
